INCURSION SESSIONS FOR STUDENTS
Projects and Themes for Incursions
Projects and Themes for Incursions
Major Projects
I offer a major project covering ten (10) full day sessions undertaken over 1 term. This option provides the school with the opportunity to offer students a learning experience covering a more ambitious project than staff would otherwise have undertaken.
The major project Includes 2 hour session after school for staff / parents to either explain the scope of the project / demonstrate the students work / train staff in the software used . Individual sessions are 1 hr 40 min long and I can take either one class for the entire duration or 3 classes per day repeated for 10 sessions.
Minor Project
A minor project consists of ten (10) half day sessions undertaken over 1 term and also includes 2 hour session after school for staff / parents to either explain the scope of the project / demonstrate the students work / train staff in the software used .
These sessions are 1 hr 10 min long and I can take either one class for the entire duration or 2 classes per half day repeated for 10 sessions.
Both options provides an in-school expert with all the equipment to undertake a major project, without any of the expense of funding a full-time teacher, software or hardware.
Select from 1 or 2 of the software/robotics applications I offer and nominate your own theme or allow me to plan it for you.

Projects
Your major/minor project could also encompass a theme plus one of these projects :
Below, The Ecological Hotel by Patterson Lakes Primary School as part of the Western Animatronics Project: Tell Me a Story
This project was based on the “Myer Store Christmas Windows” . In 2007 several schools participated in a similar project and the final dioramas were displayed at Scienceworks.
For your own Animatronics Project - Students will select a theme or story (could be a commercial or student authored story ) and build and program figures and scenery using control technology ( robotics – LEGO MINDSTORMS ) and mechanical systems with some electronics. Items will be installed in a “diorama” style tableau ( Large “Coreflute Boxes”) that represents a selected scene from the story. The number of separate dioramas will depend on the number of students participating in the project. The combined set of dioramas will tell the entire story and will be installed together at a site decided by the school where students and parents may view their completed work and possibly be on site to explain the process to other viewers
Anamatronics Details
The Animatronics methodology can only be undertaken if your school has LEGO robots as it requires the models to be progressive and stay built over an extended period of time. ( This would tie my robots up for too long)
Your school will be required to purchase
Coreflute for the boxes ( 1 sheet - approximately $15.00 per sheet)
Bookbinding tape to construct the boxes
Transformers ( if your LEGO sets don’t already have these) to power the models for an extended period of time.
We will require access to the art room and use of some art/craft materials and equipment such as paint and paper.
Depending on the students capabilities, project length and plans we may also incorporate Additional LED’s. LED’s , wire and joiners would be at cost to the school ( approximately $2.00 per LED, pack of wire clamps approx $8.00, wire approx $8.00)
Due to the scope and complexity of this project this methodology is only offered for the Major Project 1 x 10 day bookings.
I encourage class teachers to become involved in the planning of the project, story writing etc.
At project completion schools will have an outstanding display for their foyer plus knowledgeable and skilled students
Robots In Surgery
This activity is both a theme and a methodology. Elements of this activity include:
Why Use Robots in surgery? What do they look like/ What can they do and what’s in the future?
Medical conditions caused by poor lifestyle choices that could be treated using robots in surgery i.e. smoking, lack of exercise, poor eating habits, drugs. How is the body affected?
Simulated Operation
We will create a simulated operation by painting images of organs on a large drop sheet and create robots that simulate nano robots by entering the organs and performing operations such as tumor / cholesterol removal/ simulate the digestive system and the course of food through the body
Sensors, Senses & Emotions
How does a robot know about it’s environment? What types of information can a robot collect?
We will cover the differences and similarities between humans and robots, emotions and what makes us human
The practical robotics side will include programming a robot that can respond( have emotions) to the students voices using it's own voice and graphics
