Teachers P.D.
Power Point Essentials
As with many of the Microsoft Office products, we often assume that teachers have honed their 'Power Point' skills to use this valuable program in their teaching. This is often far from the truth and can lead to teachers with limited skills under-using this essential program and unable to up-skill themselves to change this situation. There are few short 'Power Point' courses available that quickly and efficiently teach teachers the skills and educational applications that they need, luckily this is one of them.
Microsoft Power Point is an industry standard for creating informative visual computer generated presentations. At it's most basic application it performs like an automatic slide show. However, Power Point places a host of 'bells and whistles' in the hands of the user and can transform an ordinary presentation into an audio visual masterpiece. As 'Power Point' is a member of the Microsoft Office suite, users will find a uniformity of tools such as creating graphics, importing pictures, locating files and using menu bars, that they may already be familiar with via Microsoft Word.
For your students, applications can include creating a personalized digital portfolio about themselves and their work, digital research assignments, digital instructions and creative animations for story telling. As the saying goes 'Familiarity breeds contempt', and in the case of 'Power Point' many teachers feel 'Power Point-outed' through being subjected to hours of bland text based shows that use minimum 'bells and whistles'. This workshop will empower teachers with the creative essentials to take their classes to new levels.
What we will do:
Explore and use some of the more creative (and under-used) tools from the menu bar to -
- Create a simple animation to convey an idea / tell a story / demonstrate the workings of a machine or method
- Use freeware to record (video) some computer technique instructions and embed this into their show (Great for creating self-paced teaching aids)
- Explore the power of hyperlinks
- Work with the slide sorter, applying and changing layouts, inserting pictures, using the drawing tools and the advantage of grouping objects.
- Customise various facets of 'Power Point' to make it more user-friendly.
Who is this workshop suitable for?
- Teachers who may be moving from early years classes to teaching middle and upper years classes.
- Teachers who have self-assessed that they have minimal 'Power Point' skills.
