Dancing Robots

RoboCup Junior - VIc Competition

2008

The 2008 RoboCup Junior competition at Deakin University Waurn Ponds saw two students from Mowbray college win the senior dance section with an extraordinary combination of high end engineering, inspired programming and restrained artistry that belied their years. Their geisha robot executed a beautiful fan dance to atmospheric Japanese music complete with a Tori gateway in the background. The robot's arm movements with the two fans were fluid and so lifelike that I'm still trying to work out how they replicated human's ball-and-socket type joints.

Drysdale Primary School entered a number of teams, these dancing penguins took my fancy:

Drysdale PS

Here are some other robot's from the senior and junior dance sections:

Dino
Droids

These 'Droids' were effective in their simplicity and "walking" type movement

Mikey Mouse

Mickey and Minny Mouse created by Ruskin Park Primary School were extremely cute, the bow tie on Mickey was on a gear rack and moved up and down

Beetle

From Patterson Lakes Primary School : This ladybird beetle presented several different types of movement, the wings flapped horizontally, the nose spun and the wheels danced to "I Think I can Fly"
