CREATING YOUR OWN GRAPHICS (.rso) file for the NXT LCD screen
LEGO has made available a simple graphics drawing program (similar to MS Paint) for NXT on their web site .
Download, un-zip and save the file on your computer. Put a shortcut to this utility on the desktop. Create your graphics and click "save as " and add a name. This utility usually ( on a stand-alone, un-networked computer) automatically saves your graphic into the NXT programs ENGINE, PICTURES folder where the file is saved as a .ric file and will appear in your pull down graphics menu in the NXT software graphics configuration bar.
Now that you have created your graphics you can use it in your NXT robots program and show it on the NXT LCD screen
The FILE SAVE AS from the FILE pull down menu for your graphics file is not designed for networked computers. For networked computers ask the students to save their created graphics in a specific folder. The teacher/systems administrator will have to manually move their graphics over to the NXT Software, ENGINE, PICTURES folder on your server. It can then be accessed by the students in the manner described above

Record Your Own Sound Effects & Voice , Then Play them on the NXT Brick Within a Program
This simple tool converts the standard Windows.wav file into a .roc file that can be played on your NXT brick
Sound files take up a lot of room on the NXT brick so keep your sound effects or voice-overs short
The procedure -
- Use the windows recording feature on your PC. Access this from the START MENU--> ALL PROGRAMS--->ACCESSORIES-->ENTERTAINMENT--->Sound recorder. Plug in a microphone and record your sound effect / voice.
- SAVE AS- Save this sound file where you can find it again
- Download the WAV2RSO.ZIP file
- Unzip the file
- Save the file and place a shortcut to it on your desktop
- Open WAV2RSO and use this to convert your sound file from a .wav file to the NXT sound file format -.roc - file- Select the .wav file you wish to convert, click Linear, click Convert.
- Save your new .roc sound file in the NXT program sounds folder.
The FILE SAVE AS from the FILE pull down menu for your WAV2RSO file is not designed for networked computers. For networked computers, ask the students to save their converted .roc file in a specific folder.
The teacher/systems administrator will have to manually move their .wav files over to the NXT Software, ENGINE, SOUNDS folder on your server. It can then be accessed by the students from within the NXT software configuration bar for the SOUNDS icon

NXT BUILDING
Change the NXT Dolly Wheel to a Skid
The LEGO robot building instructions contained in the LEGO Education building set are for a basic robot with two wheels connected to 2 motors at the front and a dolly wheel at the back.
I have found that the dolly wheel has a tendency to jam sideways and limit the robot's movements and maneuverability. It also impacts on the robots speed on various surfaces and can contribute to the robot falling over.
These instructions show you how to replace the dolly wheel with a skid assembly that I have found substantially corrects the dolly wheel problems.
ACTIVITIES & WORKSHEETS
GENERAL ROBOTICS
Background Activities For Robotics
As a teacher you probably wish to place robotics in an understandable context in students everyday lives. The following activities do not require any actual robots.
The following links will take you to .pdf documents with physical activities and research questions with broader curriculum links that will make robotics more understandable and relevant to your students.
I recommend these activities for all schools who undertake any of my robotics sessions and as an introduction to robotics in general
I would also highly recommend the activities on the following website:
In particular the "Can a Robot Tie It's Shoelaces?" activity is excellent for demonstrating the link between sensors and human senses. The .pdf below provides guided questions and activities based on this activity
I have created a worksheet relating to this activity
Cut and Paste Programming Sheets
Once your students have done the Robotics incursion you may like to try these cut and paste programming sheets to see how much basic programming they have taken on-board. The first template is the sheet they past their programming icons onto. Sheets 2 and 3 provide the icons to cut out as well as the configuration bars for each icon. You will only need one template for each student but you may need to print off 2 or 3 copies of sheets 2 and 3 per student
RCX / ROBOLAB RESOURCES & TOOLS
Build a Sturdy Geared RCX Robot- full instructions
If you are tired of your class robots falling apart and the motors' spindles snapping if the robot is dropped, try this balanced and serviceable robot. Make sure that you standardise the two motors used per robot before installing them in your robot
Standardise your RCX Robot's Motors -
Sometimes, even though your program tells the robot to travel straight, it doesn't. Download this .pdf document to see why this happens and how you can rectify this problem
