Themes & Projects, Ideas for Teachers
These photo pages contain a selection of images from several projects I have been involved in /mentored
THE WESTERN ANAMATRONICS PROJECT
TELL ME A STORY
These dioramas were inspired by the "Myer Christmas Windows". The scenes were constructe inside "Coreflute" boxes and the LEGO RCX bricks have been programmed to animate various elements in the diorama to tell the story. The students selected the theme The Eighth Wonder of the World. Transport themes featured strongly, four schools participated : The Grange Primary Schoo, Glen Orden Primary School, Christ Church Grammar School and Patterson Lakes Primary School
Students faces have been obscured for privacy and security purposes

From top to bottom:
The Ecological Hotel by Patterson Lakes Primary School complete with working lift ( left photo) and gymnasium
Glen Orden Primary Schools Transport Vista, complete with mono rail
Christ Church Grammar School contributed the Lost City Of Atlantis
The Grange Primary split their scene into two sections to show the invention of the wheel in the past and it's application in the future
ROBOTS GO TO SCHOOL - ROBO CAMPUS
This was a project I led for the opening of Melbourne Grammar School's new learning centre in April 2008. Follow the link for full details on this project

KIDS CONGRESS- I'TS YOUR BODY , WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
When I received the invitation to lead a group of students in robotics with the theme "It's Your Body, Who Is Responsible? it gave me pause for thought
Well, for about 2 seconds, until I connected "Robotics In Surgery" with "Unhealthy Lifesyles and Consequences"

ROBO FARM ANIMALS
The following photos were the result of my mentoring a studnet group at eTRAIN, the students toured the Collingwood Children's Farm and here's what they came up with :

The horse above was able to move it's head up and down, swing it's tail and move around it's paddock. We used a light sensor to keep it inside the paddock boundary ( tape) .
All the students started off with a basic robot ( in this case an RCX robot though a NXT would work as well) and I provided additional LEGO building pieces and a minimum of one extra motor

Yes, girls do get into robotics if you choose the right theme
(Childrens faces are obscured for security purposes)

Lamb and rooster , above ^

The PEABOT3000 could open and close it's tail feathers- Love the use of joggle eyes!

Planning the goat ( above) completion below

Planning and negotiation are part of all my projects. The students vision for their robot must be processd through:
Is it possible ?- Do I have the skills or can I learn them in the time frame
- What do I already know / Can I already do?
- What equipment / materials do I have
- What do I have to learn?
- What equipment/ materials can I get hold of?
- Does my idea meet the design brief?
- Is there an easier / more effective way of doing it?
- Can I improve my plan?
- Will it be worthwhile in the end? Effort -V- Results
- Can I do it safely ?

CHRISTMAS ROBOTS
Why not consider and end of the year robotics incursion?
